Maybe there aren’t as many
as you’d like,
and maybe they aren’t
responding right away, because
they are tending a garden
and tying little shoes
and grinding coffee
and blowing their nose
and remembering the library
and wondering how you are
as they are doing dishes
With their phone half in a pocket
in the other room.
Just because they are
busy and quiet
doesn’t mean they don’t exist
or don’t care about you.
